Preparing for Ramadan
In this intensive workshop, students will learn not only about the technical aspects of Ramadan, but also the spiritual and practical aspects of this blessed month. Most new Muslims are told to fast without actually being told what fasting entails. We will explore the Fiqh of Fasting, including things to do to increase reward and things to avoid that may negate some rewards. We will also elaborate on one’s relationship with Allah and using Ramadan as a means to get closer to Him. Some of the basic rules of Zakat will be discussed. And of course, what’s Ramadan without a little enjoyment? We will show students Halal and meritorious ways of celebrating Ramadan and Eid, and discuss ways to strengthen community and brotherhood.
Speaker
Sr. Zainab Chaudhry is a practicing attorney in New York. After graduating law school in 1998, she worked for several years as a judicial law clerk for the New York Court of Appeals. She has recently returned to the U.S. after spending the last four years studying Arabic in Syria, where she also studied tajweed, Shafi'i fiqh, and basic texts in several other Islamic sciences. She is currently residing in Albany, New York, where she works as an Assistant Solictor General with the NYS Attorney General's Office.
