'Critical Changes to Caltrans Section 39 Asphalt Specifications'
 
Significant changes to Caltrans asphalt specifications have been made in the last year. There are new requirements for contractors and public owners. What you don't know could cost you!

Who should attend?  Contractors, suppliers, estimators, engineers, QC managers, plant managers, city & county public works representatives and anyone with an interest in the latest information on asphalt technology and specifications as they relate to public works projects.

How can I register?  Space is limited so this class is on a first-come, first served basis. Pre-registration is required and must be completed on-line.

Once you complete the registration process, you will receive a confirmation number and a confirmation notice via e-mail. You may pay on-line via credit card or by check. Where is the seminar being held?  The seminar will be held at the City/County Library, Community Room, 995 Palm Street (directly across the street from City Hall), San Luis Obispo, CA. There are two nearby parking structures that charge 75 cents per hour after the first hour. There's very limited free parking on the street several blocks away.

What time is the seminar?  The seminar will begin at 1 p.m.. sharp, and ends at 4:30 p.m.. Check-in opens at 12:30 p.m.

  • Background of Section 39 changes; Intent of Changes
    Industry involvement
  • Organization of the new Section 39: General, Standard, Method, Quality Control/Quality Assurance, Measurement & Payment
  • Materials: Mix & Binder types; Material Requirements (Aggregates & HMA Mix Design Requirements)
  • Job Mix Formula: Submittal; Review; Verification; and Startup verification
  • Contractor Quality Control
  • Agency Quality Assurance
  • Installation: Subgrade; Tack Cote; Interlayer; Spreading and Compacting Equipment; Transporting, Spreading & Compacting; Smoothness; Compaction (Standard & Method)
  • Cores or nuclear testing for compaction
  • Additional workmanship provisions
  • Contract administration checklist
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Reference materials, samples and checklists
BONUS!  Each attendee will receive a valuble reference binder that contains comprehensive information on Section 39, highlights the new changes, and provides backround material, samples, checklists, official forms and more.

Who is the instructor?  The lead instructor is Paul Curren, P.E., (pictured), Senior Principal Engineer for Pavement Engineering, Inc., and a noted expert on state and local asphalt pavement specifications, testing, mix designs and QC/QA. He'll provide real-world, objective information that includes ample attention to the perspective of both the owner and the contractor. The curriculum for this class was reviwed and approved by the CalAPA Education Committee: Tim Denlay with Knife River, Jack Van Kirk with George Reed, Inc. and Tracy Zubek with DeSilva Gates Materials.
