The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) www.recovery.gov is definitely succeeding in stimulating Healthcare IT by mandating the implementation of electronic medical record (EMR) systems for physicians and hospitals by 2015. Surveys show that current adoption of EMR systems is less than 20%.
This presents tremendous challenges for the 404,000 physicians and approximately 6,000 hospitals in the United States. Conversely, this presents tremendous career opportunities for hospital IT staffs, EMR vendors and consultants. There are not enough experienced Healthcare IT professionals to satisfy the expected demand. In fact, studies predict a need for an additional 50,000 healthcare IT professionals.
