Event Details

This quarter's Day of Mindfulness offers a precious opportunity to experience an authentic zazenkai (a day-long retreat in the Soto Zen School tradition) under the guidance of guest teacher, Jose Muhan Shinzan Palma, the Head Priest and Temple Coordinator for Upaya Zen Center in New Mexico. Muhan is Poep Sa's dharma brother through their training together under the tutelage of Korean Seon (Zen) Master Samu Sunim. For the last 8 years, Muhan has been living, practicing and teaching at Upaya and was made Dharma Holder by Roshi Joan Halifax.

The theme for today's retreat comes from Dogen Zenji's Fukan Zazen-ji, where he describes zazen (sitting meditation in the Soto Zen tradition) as "the dharma gate of ease and joy."

You are welcome to arrive between 7:45 and 7:50 AM for the 8 AM start or at 9:30 AM for the 9:45 entry into the retreat. Please bring a bagged lunch for our silent meal together.

The $15 fee is for rent and to support the Empty Mountain Sangha's Retreat Scholarship Fund. Dana will be gratefully accepted for the teachers.

BIOS:

Shinzan Jose Manuel Palma was born in Veracruz, Mexico. He has been practicing Zen since 1996. He met his former teacher, Korean Zen Master Samu Sunim in Mexico City and trained under his guidance for 8 years. He did a residential training for 4 years at the Zen Buddhist Temple in Toronto, Canada and was ordained as a novice priest by Samu Sunim in 2004. After leaving Canada, he was invited by Roshi Joan Halifax to come to Upaya in 2006. Shinzan asked Roshi to be her student and he was re-ordained as a Priest in 2007 by Roshi Joan Halifax. Since then, he has been at Upaya practicing with the community. He is now the Head Priest and Temple coordinator, giving guidance to the residents on Zen training. He became Dharma holder on March, 2010. He has a sincere and strong heart committed to the Dharma.

Poep Sa Frank Jude Boccio is a certified Yoga Teacher and Dharma Teacher, ordained by Korean Zen Master, Samu Sunim. His eclectic approach is influenced by his study of a variety of Yoga approaches and his many years of Dharma practice, evidenced by his emphasis on mindfulness and compassionate action. His book, Mindfulness Yoga: The Awakened Union of Breath, Body, and Mind is the first to apply the Buddha’s mindfulness meditation teachings (satipatthana) to yogasana practice.

He sits of the Board of Directors for New Leaf Yoga Foundation, a non-profit organization that brings mindfulness yoga to incarcerated youth and children at risk. Based in Tucson, where he lives with his wife, Monica, their daughter Giovanna and their two cats and two chickens, Frank Jude established the Empty Mountain Sangha/Tucson Mindfulness Practice Community in 2009 and travels wherever invited, leading workshops and retreats.

Empty Mountain Sangha/Tucson Mindfulness Practice Community
Empty Mountain Sangha is an open community of individuals joined by the shared value of living a mindful and compassionate life and everyone is welcome!.

Established by Poep Sa (Dharma Teacher) Frank Jude Boccio in 2009, the community is an independent, unaffiliated, nonsectarian sangha exploring an approach to zen buddhism that is firmly rooted in a naturalistic, scientific, rational and empirical understanding Poep Sa Frank Jude has termed zen naturalism.
