"Behold, We have willed that all beauty on earth be a means by which We put men to a test, [showing] which of them are best in conduct." [Surah al-Kahf;18:7].

To write out or beautify passages from the Quran, is an act of religious devotion and excellence, encouraging the worshiper to reflect on the infinite wisdom and grace of his Creator, and to strive for proficiency. This workshop is intended to introduce students with no prior art experience to some complimentary concepts in Islamic art; specifically Kufic Square script and geometric pattern design. Students will focus on religious reflection while reviewing frameworks for recreating words in Kufic Square script and creating geometric patterns.

Instructor:
Aafia Chaudhry developed a love of art and crafts at a very early age, and when asked about her training, defers that all success comes from Allah (SWT) alone. She has completed studies in drawing, painting, and silkscreen painting at the New York Academy of Art and Manhattan Graphic Center and pursues self-directed studies. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Aafia graduated from the University of Manchester Medical School, trained in general surgery prior to moving to New York City in 2002. She currently works in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry as Vice President, Market Strategy for WebMD and Medscape.
